I’ll admit it.
I have more dark spots on my face than the sky has stars. Well, maybe not that many but it sure does feel like it sometimes!
Dark spots are certainly not the worst thing that can pop up on your skin. In fact, some women look absolutely stunning with them, including celebrities with freckles.
But I am not one of them.
I love the look of an even skin tone. If you’re like I was and want to learn how to get rid of sunspots, this article can help.
You’ll learn just what these specks are and what the best product is for sunspots on the face.
Quick Navigation
What Are Sunspots and How Do You Get Them?
Sunspots, also known as solar lentigines or more commonly referred to as freckles (even though they’re technically not the same), are from sun exposure. They are flat and brown in color.
The thing about sunspots is that once you get one, you can expect to get a whole lot more.
Sunspots usually pop up on the nose, cheeks, upper lip, forehead, ears, neck and arms. They can be lighter or darker than your natural skin tone.
Sunspots are caused by prolonged exposure to the sun, more specifically, to direct ultraviolet rays.
Every summer, I saw more and more sunspots popping up. I joked that they would eventually all connect and leave me with a year-round tan, but in all honesty, they were driving me crazy. I set out to find a way to get rid of sunspots for good.
Here’s how to remove sunspots, once and for all!
How to Get Rid of Sunspots on Your Face?
The best way I’ve found to remove sunspots on face skin is to mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. The apple cider vinegar contains natural acids that help to lighten skin, while lemon juice contains citric acid, another ingredient great for evening out skin tones.
Apply the mixture to a cotton ball and work across your face, concentrating on areas with more sunspots. You might experience a bit of redness or even stinging at first, which is completely normal.
You should begin to see results within a couple of weeks.
You can also try glycolic acid lotion, which is the best product for sunspots on face. It can also help shrink pore size and clear your skin.
I’ll be going over more natural remedies later on.
How to Get Rid of Sunspots on Your Legs?
Here’s how to get rid of sunspots on your legs.
You can try the same mixture as above. The lemon juice and apple cider vinegar method will work. It might even work better because the skin on your legs is less sensitive.
If you felt a bit of burning when applying the mixture to sunspots on face, you might not feel anything when you apply it to your legs.
When trying to remove sunspots from your legs, it’s important to be consistent. Because the skin is thicker, it might take a bit longer to see the results that you’re after.
As long as you’re persistent, this method or any of the upcoming home remedies will work to clear your legs up.
How to Get Rid of White Sunspots?
Unfortunately, this is where my good news ends.
White sunspots are less likely to go away. This is because the pigment-producing cells of the skin are essentially burnt out from excessive sun exposure.
While you can’t necessarily treat these white spots, you can help to improve their appearance by lightening darker skin around them. This will help to create the illusion of a more even skin tone.
Do Sunspots Go Away on Their Own?
I’m afraid not!
Sunspots do not go away on their own. In fact, you can expect them to darken over time. You will also notice an increase in sunspots with each passing year.
If you’re waiting for sunspots to go away on their own, you’re going to be waiting for quite some time.
Take the right steps today to lighten your sunspots with one of my tried and true remedies.
Can You Get Rid of Sunspots That Come with Aging?
Yes, with the proper treatment you can fade any type of sunspot.
The larger and darker a sunspot is, the harder sunspot removal might be. But there are always improvements you can make to even out your skin tone.
What Are Some Natural Remedies?
If you’re looking for natural remedies when it comes to how to remove sun spots, you might have everything you need already in your kitchen! Here are some of the best methods I’ve used to remove sunspots the natural way:
Buttermilk
- Buttermilk is full of lactic acid, which can bleach the skin. It won’t dry your skin out, and it’s safe for even sensitive skin. Simply dip a cotton ball in a little buttermilk and directly apply it to sunspots. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes. You can use a bandage to hold it in place if you would like. Do this twice a day until you achieve your desired results.
Castor Oil
- Castor oil is great for your hair but it can also be used to even out your skin tone. Again, take a cotton ball and apply it directly onto your sunspots. Use your fingertips to gently massage the oil into your skin. This should be done when you have plenty of free time as you really need to let the oil sit for a couple of hours. You should see results in about a month. This is a slow and steady process, but I had great results with castor oil.
- I love using aloe vera for my skin, so I was excited when I found out it could be used for sunspots as well! All you have to do is rub a little bit of aloe vera gel (directly from the plant if you can) onto your sunspots. Wait for about 30 minutes and rinse if needed. This can be repeated twice a day, and you should see results in only a few weeks.
If you have sunspots, you don’t have to deal with them forever. While there are over the counter products you can buy, there are also plenty of natural remedies for sunspot removal. In addition, there are also several skin therapy treatments that you can undergo to remove your sunspots and other unwanted skin problems. Read more about skin therapy here.
Now that you know how to get rid of sunspots, you’ll be enjoying clear skin before you know it.
